Sword Beach
On the morning of June 6th 1944, the 3rd Infantry Division of the British 2nd Army and 177 French Marines landed near Lion-sur-Mer along the Normandy Coast of France. Meeting fierce resistance from the 716th German Infantry Division, the Brits have a difficult time moving between the shore and the line of houses along the beach. When Lord Lovet and his Scottish 1st Special Service Brigade arrive on the beach, he is accompanied by his Piper, Billy Millin, who is playing “Go for Highland Laddie” inspiring the British forces to push onward.

Never forget the brave men leading the liberation of occupied Europe.

Omaha Beach...landing point for the 1st and 29th Infantry Divisions.
Starting at 0630, the 34,000 men of the 1st and 29th Infantry Divisions started hitting the beach under heavy fire by the 352nd Infantry Division of the German Army. Over 2,400 US service members perished assaulting the beach during the effort to retake the European continent from the Third Reich. The sacrifice and bravery the Greatest Generation laid bare at our feet must never be forgotten.

The Hallowed ground of Utah Beach, Normandy France.

On the morning of 6 June 1944, about 20,000 members of the US 4th Infantry Division stormed Utah Beach west of the Douve and Vire Rivers on the Cotentin Peninsula. Supported by the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions who parachuted inland hours earlier, the 4th Infantry Division meet limited German Defenses and quickly secured the beach and worked inland to connect with the two Airborne Divisions to liberate surrounding towns.

Never forget the sacrifice of the Greatest Generation.

In the early morning of 6 June 1944, 1st Lt Dick Winters, acting Easy Company Commander, led 16 other men against approximately 50 German Soldiers manning 4 105mm guns firing on Utah Beach, striking the members of the US VII Corps and US 4th Infantry Division. Splitting his team up, Lt Winters attacked through the hedgerows and into the trenches. After securing the first 3 105mm guns, Easy Company destroyed each weapon, easing the landing of American forces. Lt Ronald Speirs showed up with members of Dog Company and took out the fourth and final gun. The battle lasted roughly 3 hours. Adding Dog Company’s soldiers, the US forces, equaling 21 paratroopers, attacked 50 Germans and 4 105mm guns. Out of the 21, 4 paratroopers died and 6 were wounded. 1st Lt Dick Winters was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, and other members were awarded Silver and Bronze Stars.

Joan of Ark (Sainte Jeanne-D’Arc) 1412-1431: From a peasant French girl called by God to save France, to a French military leader against the English, to a convicted heretic and witch, then burned at the stake while clutching and staring at a cross while proclaiming the name “Jesus” as she died, prompting an onlooker to say, “We have burned a saint.” Legend says her heart did not burn, and the soldiers had to throw in into the Seine River so no one could venerate her remains. 20 years later she was cleared of all crimes in a new trial, then in 1920 Canonized as a Saint by Pope Benedict XV.

On this spot in the morning of 30 May 1431, she was burned at the stake in the marketplace of Rouen, France at the age of 19.

Sad news to hear this historic, ~300 year old tree was cut down this week. One of the most visited sites along Hadrian’s Wall, the Sycamore Gap is well know, and was featured in the 90’s Robin Hood: Price of Thieves movie.
Please don’t destroy history!

Hadrian’s Wall

Hadrian’s Wall is the most important structure built by the Romans in Britain. Stretching 73 miles from Bowness-on-Soloway to Wallsend on the River Tyne, the wall was the most north-western frontier of the Roman Empire, and protected the Romans from the babarians. Built on the orders of Emperor Hadrian, who visited Britain in AD 122, the wall, with its Milecastles, Turrets, Gates, and Forts, stood ready to protect Roman Britain and maintain frontier control. Dissecting Britain at its most narrow point, parts of the wall still stand 1,900 years later, due to superior engineering skills and solid materials. Hiking from Birdoswald Fort, past the Sycamore Gap (the location of a scene in Kevin Costner’s Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, then past Sewingshields is the most rewarding and picturesque part of the wall. Just be warned, it is very undulating and steep in parts so it is not an easy hike. Also, be aware of all the ‘land mines’ the sheep, cows and other assorted animals leave for you to navigate. This is a bucket list location and is a must visit!
